Terin looks to pursue his passion for Computer Science by developing or maintaining apps.
Roadmap.
"Keep on practicing and enhancing your coding skills by learning through online websites such as codecademy.com, and if you don’t like a certain aspect of Computer Science, try looking for other aspects that may seem interesting to you."
MILESTONES
My career roadmap has been somewhat defined.
I’ve always grown up messing around and exploring computers as my dad is a Software Engineer. When I was really young, I would often use Google Sites’ framework (now the old Google Sites) to make random websites and explore how they were built.
I started learning HTML online during middle school to learn more about how websites worked, but I was not really a fan of it.
I began making apps in High School because I was curious about how smartphones worked and I really enjoyed the creative process, but I didn’t like coding apps in Java.
I also took a couple Computer Science classes at COC to explore how a comprehensive coding class was like and I enjoyed the critical thinking involved in programming.
I’d always thought of coding as more of a hobby than a carrier initially, but I realized how much time and excitement I got from creating and programming so I decided to pursue it as a career.
I actively began researching the career and started exploring other programming languages (like Python) and aspects of computer science such as AI.
Even though I’m about to start college at UCSD, I feel as though I am just starting my journey in exploring how vast and exciting different parts of Computer Science can be. I look forward to seeing what more I can learn about this field in the near future.
EXPERIENCE
Here are my extracurriculars relevant to this pathway
DURING MY HIGH SCHOOL CAREER
Engaged in app development through Android Studio
Learned new coding languages through online courses and developed various programs
Experimented and coded with simple AI programs to understand the Machine Learning process.
Started exploring various distros and environments to understand how to use Linux and Unix
DURING MY COLLEGE CAREER
Currently waiting to step foot on campus!
CAREER
What I'm currently doing/hope to do
I have spent most of my life exploring the field of computer science. I know that I want to pursue a career involving one of the aspects in computer science, but I still need more time to learn what it specifically is. My time in college will be used to hone my skills and find a specific aspect that I truly enjoy and appreciate for the rest of my life.
ADVICE
How to maximize my time in high school?
Advice #1: Take multiple Computer Science classes at COC to truly understand both what coding is, and how you are going to learn as you go into University.
Advice #2: Try coding small projects at home to develop your skills and to test your ability to solve problems.
Advice #3: Keep on practicing and enhancing your coding skills by learning through online websites such as codecademy.com, and if you don’t like a certain aspect of Computer Science, try looking for other aspects that may seem interesting to you.
